CFD simulations – the future of fire safety solutions Water mist standards focus on controlling, suppressing, or extinguishing fire, like traditional sprinkler systems. The basic function of water mist systems can be documented with the help of fire test reports issued by an internationally recognised independent laboratory and/or with the help of approval certificates issued by an international notified body. Very often, only the fire performance equivalencies with sprinkler systems are documented. CFD simulations have been introduced to reproduce fire test results for use in extended fields of application. At Danfoss Fire Safety, we have developed CFD models that allow alternative scenarios to be investigated for our SEM-SAFE® high- pressure water mist system. The data from the CFD models help our customers to make informed decisions when it comes to the choice of fire safety. Key advantages: • Our experts can provide our customers with the information on nozzles and their characteristics required for CFD simulations. • With every CFD model, we add to our library, develop our understanding of how nozzles react in certain conditions, and are thus better equipped to advise our customers. • We can extend the fields of application we protect without the need for real-life fire test. • We create “what if” scenarios in which we can virtually evaluate the consequences of changing one factor of real-life tests. This helps to clarify any uncertainties. • We can provide documentation that can facilitate the change from prescriptive to performance-based design. This can offer increased flexibility to designers, consultants, and other stakeholders involved in a project while meeting the safety needs. 2 Danfoss Fire Safety A/S · Computational Fluid Dynamics
